Sir Hector, replying to the welcome extended him at PajGnerston, eai<X that when he left India it was his intention to visit ralmerston and take Sir John M'Kenzie by surprise. As things turned out it was he (Sir Hector) who had been taken by surprise to find Sir John M'Kenzie at home in his last resting-place.. New Zealand had lost a man of great character— a man full of sympathy, full of resource, and, p3rbß.pa t in our time, ire would not get bis equal, bu& each and all, especially the young, might strive to follow his good example. lie understood a memorial to Sir John was to be promoted, and, without presuming to offer any advice, lie would suggent that from what he knew of fciir John it would be carrying out his wishes if a portion, at least", of the money raised were devoted to fch&
education of the j>oor, in the shape of bursaries or something of that sort. At Shag Point Mis 3 M'Kenxie met the general and conducted him to Heathn"eld, where he paid Jus respecte to Lady M'Kenzie.
