THE JOURNEY TO CHRISTCHURCH.
(SPECIAL TO "THE MtESS.") . DUNEDIN, October 28. General Macdonald left at nine o'clock thut morning, by special train, for Oamaru. He was accompanied to the station by the Mayor, and was accorded an enthusiastic send-off. The membership ticket* presented by the Gaelic Society, is a handsome piece of work. The covers are bound in. morocco leather, with gilt edgings. On one page of the in* side is a picture of Mount Earnelaw, and the surrounding mountains, with the head waters of Lake Wakatipu in the- foreground. Is one corner, New Zealand and the Old Land are brought into touch by a happy commingling oi the thistle and native pknts. On top there is written in the Gaelic language: —"Gaelic Society of Maoriland," and "Fighting Mac's" name is inscribed, with, bis various military titles. On the other inside page of the ticket.another typical piece of New Zealand scenery, appears, with a representation of moas in the foreground, while alongside the names of the officers of the Society are printed. The casket, of native woods, is square in shape, with projecting mouldings, and has a .very artistic appearance. Most of the New' Zealand figured woods have been used, notably rimu, or red.pne, rewarewa.- or honeysuckle, red birch, riobonwood, pepper tree, kawakawa, mottled kauri, bog manuka, mikimiki, and mottled totara, which, are all beautifully polished. The case lias a Scotch thistle prominently displayed, and the corners have also the same emblems nicely introduced. On the corners of the top are depicted, with, well-selected woods, four Union Jacks, while the centre has a star representing the Southern Cross. In a letter to Mr Macpherson, chieftain of the GaeKo Society, Sir Hector wrote: —"I am highly pleased to leave Dunedin carrying with mc veey pleasant memories of the warmth wifch which I was received by toy countrymen and countrywomen. If you will do mc a favour by letting it he known you will place mc under another obligation to yourself."
