LYTTELTON.
A special meeting of the Lyttelton , Borough. Council was held last night. Present— £I*9 Mayor and Crs. Brown., Garrard, liadcliife, Kay, Smith, Cleary, Cook, and . Whitby. Lite business of the nweting was | the adoption of a special order declaring I gorse and broom within the borough to be ! noxious weeds under the Act. This was ' done, and the Council then, held an ordinary ' meeting, the same members being present, with the addition of O. Webb. The Canterbury Women's Institute wrote" asking that i a lady should bs elected a delegate for the ' Charitable Aid Board election", and suggesting tin names of several ladies. Cr. Radcliffe moved that the Mayor ! and Cγ. Webb should represent the Gtouncil as delegates, and this wae agreed to. The ratepayers in Hs&thcote wrote asking the Council to lay water pipes in th , ? Valley,, the Heathcote Road Board agreeing lo pay for the pipes and laying them if tht Council-would" supply "waler at 2s 6d ptr thousand jrahons. Tiie matter was referred to the Water. Supply Committee to report: Dr. ,Syme6,:bealto officEir, reported on sevei*al buildings, "and made several recommendations.. The Town-Clerk reported that the matters had been attended to. The report was referred to the Sanitary Committee, with power to act. Miss Joyce wiote thanking tne Council for their sympathy in the family's recent bereavement.' The" Council decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr U&orge Laurenson on the death of hie biother. The, Finance Committee repor*i.. receipts amounting to £165 7s 7d, na*x ftcommended payment of accounts amounting to £284 18a bd. The Foreman of Works reported that, in consequence of the accident 1 J)9 had met with, lie had ben unafole to superintend the laying of the pipes in the tunnel, but the work was in good hands. Hβ hoped to bs able to resume his duties in a few weeks. The engineer at the pump- , nig station reported that 3,690,000 gallons 1 had been. pumped, 'as compared with 5,V5b7,000-gallons during the corresponding ' fcur weeks last year. The Works Committee recommended-the destruction of gurse and broom; that all drain connections should be i under the supervision of the Council's staff; that.a foreman ol works At a, salaay of £4 • a week shoujd.be advertised far, tine foreman to act also temporarily as inspector, and during the absence of Mr fcowden. It wasproposed, that the new foreman should continue aitex the recovery of Mr Sowden, who should then act as Inspector. The Council went into committee, and oa resuming adjouniffid. .
