NEW ZEALAND AND THE PACIFIC CABLE.
ASSERTIONS .BY THE "AGE."
United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 22nd, 1.6 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 22. ■ The "Age," dealing with Sir Joseph Ward's denial of its statements in reference to the Pacific cable, says the statements were based upon information from two sources, viz., New Zealand official correspondence and private letters fronr Queensland. Tne paper publishes extracts from the official correspondence, showing that Sir Joseph. Ward, in a letter to Mr W. P. Reeves, New Zealand AgentG enexal, mentioned that New Zealand would be prepared to take charge of the cable and find the necessary operating and electrical staff if desired. Another extract from a letter by Sir uoseph Ward to Air Audley Coote was a proof that New Zealand was considering the construction of a State-owned cable to Australia. The "Age" concludes its somewhat lame defence with the etatement that either the official correspondence or Sir Josepn Ward is incorrect in reference to $he Pacific cable. ' .
