THE SEVENTH CONTINGENT.
(PBBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, October 22. Mr Seddqn «has received the following cablegram from Colonel Porter, commanding the Seventh New Zealand Contingent: —'"Uampaigning away from posts. Engaged Botha's force on the 4th, sth, and 6th October; already reported casualties. Wounded doing well. Battle on the 6th lasted eight hours j enemy, 2000 strong, defeated at all points. New Zealanders charged apd captured first position, an important hill on the enemy's right flank, and held it under an exceedingly heavy fire, concentrated from the front anu flanks. New Zealanders were first in action, their courage and reliance being highly estimated. They are consequently always employed to carry out the most .hazardous duties. The Contingent's casualties were two killed and seven wounded; rest well."
