LABOUR DAY DEMONSTRATION

A meeting of the Labour Day Demonstration Committee waa held on Saturday, tie preaident, Mr J. A. MeCullongh, being in the chair, and representatives from thirty-five Unione being present. Mr H. G. EH, M.H.R., wrote stating that he would be present on Labour Day, and would give • prize. A number of school committees intimated that the schools would be closed on Labour Day. A number of Unions •wrote giving details of the prizes they were presenting for competition. The Children's oports Committee reported that ample amuaeinenta for the children had been provided. Oommunicatiroas weare received from Tarious Unions giving details of the displays they would make in the procession; it was also reported that a number of industriaJ and commercial firms intended giving displays. The Procession Committee reported that the procession would end form on Park terrace, and proceed along Armagh street, around Cranmer equate, dbng Kiltnore street, Victoria, street, Colombo street. High street, around Clock Tower, along Manchester street, Worcester street, Colombo street, Cashel Mt»esb, Oxford terrace, and thenca to Sho-w Grounds. It -was decided to request the President of the Industrial Association, Messrs A. H. TurnbuU, J- Duncan, HursrtS«ager and Elliott to act as judges in the competition, in the proeessioa for best working trade and labour display and best manuiacturw'e industrial display* It was decided to request Messrs W. tteece, G. G. Stead, and W. I. Ballinger to be judges in best groomed and decorated horse and butcher's cart, best groomed and decorated horse and twiker's cart, and best groomed and decorated four-horse team attached to lorry. The secretary was instructed to request Sirs W. Reeoe and Mrs G. G. Stead to be judges ir» best dressed bicycle and most novel and interesting display. It was decided that all competitors in the procession should balbt for places on Saturday, 29th anst. Tbe Sports Committee reported having elected officials. The Concert Committee reported that the leading vocalists, inetraroentaliete, etc., of Christchurch and an •rtist from th« Dix Company had consented to contribute items at the concert on Labour Night. The report was adopted. The Executive reported that from enquiries made tliwe would be no difficulty in obtaining a liotiday on Labour Day, the same as Dune<Un, Wellington, and other large centres, some shopkeepers ami employers having already expressed their willingness to close on that day.. It was decided to invite the members mi tlw> Legislative Council who represented the Canterbury district to be present at the sport*. The deputation appointed to wait upon the bands, reported that the Cycle Band on their cycles had consented to head the decorated bicycles in the pxooesguon. The Woolston, Engineers, Stanmore, Elite, Linwood Temperance, two ■Lyttelton bands, and Garrison Bands had also consented to take part. It was decided to request the Burnham Band to take part, and Mr W. I. BaJlinger undertook to entertain the band, and was accorded a vote, of thanks.
