AFTERNOON .StTT I tf*J. The President took his seat at 4 p.m. After t reports had been laid on tho table, i i_e Rev. H. T. Purchas moved—"That in view of the increasing need of clergy, and of the scarcity in the supply of candidates for Holy Orders, it is desirable that more •systematic efforts should be made to bring before the young Churchmen of. the diocese the call of the Church for labourers* in the ministry, and the blessings of that service." 1 The Rev. R. F. Garbett seconded the motion, the debate on which was interrupted by the six o'clock adjournment. EVENrNG~S_TTING. The Synod resumed at 7.30 p.m., and Mr W. G. Brittan moved the second reading of the Bill to amend financial regulations with reference to parochial loans. The object) of the Bill, the mover explained, warn to replace in the regulations, a clause omitted last year, securing loans "by the personal bond of guarantors'' approved by the Church. Property Trustees. Mr D. Thomas seconded the motion, which met with muoh opposition, 'and went to a division, which resulted in ,ita rejection— : Ayes, clergy 16, laity 20; -fate, clergy ,24,; laity 16. .. " " V -".."/' ':■ - ! Mr R. Hill-Fisher moved the second reading of the Bill to amend, and to give the force of regulations to, the resolutions concerning the Clergy Widows' and Orphan-* Trust Fund. Mr Mclntyre seconded the motion, and it was explained that the B_l was brought down as the result of the work of the Commission appointed during the recess by the President. ■.. •' .. ■'< : ' 1 lie motion was carried, and the Bill committed. Progress "was reported, tihe Committee obtained leave to sit again on lYlday evening, and the Synod adjourned until 4 p.m. to-day.
