AKAROA COUNTY HORSE SHOW.

(from our special reporter.) The Akaroa County Fourth Annual Horse Show was held under the "auspices of the Banks Peninsu_. Farmers' Association in Mrs -__dbo_-_ paddock at DuvaucheUes Bay yesterday, when there was a large attendance. Toe heavy rain in the morning prevented many residents of the Peninsula from putting in an appearance, bat there were a good many visitors from Christch_r_a, who enjoyed a pleasant outing, as the day turned out beautifully fine. The Lyttelton Brass Band supplied the music, and Mr E. F. Letievre was the caterer. The judges were Messrs W. F. M. Buckley, of Dunsanddl, and W. Thomson, of Ik-moral, Who had a heavy task to perform, as the classes were all well filled and the entries, excluding the jumping competition, numbered 212, or about 100 more than last year. In draught entries Mr G-. H. Bidder's Major, an active, well-built grey, secured first honours over three ©tihers_ and Mr J. Rodrigues's well-known horse Victor, the sire of numerous prize-winners, both on the trotting track and in the show ring, beat the -handsome dapple grey Washington in the hackney entire class. Some useful working draft horses .\*ire sliown, and there was a good class of farmers' horses and mares suitable for aU round work. The light horses were, however, the feature of the -how, the Peninsula being the breeding ground of a : hardy, useful type that is greatly in favour, j Some of the best horaes, however, showed j signs of age. The fact that seventeen horses i were bought in the dietrict for service in tbe i Transvaal has aroused oonsiderable interest, ! and will no doubt stimulate the breeding of cavalry remounts. The list back class cont_ined no less than twenty-three entries, of which twenty put in an appearance in the ring, and after considerable difficulty in deciding the award, Mr H. D. Buchanan's Piraki scored the chief honour, with Mr George M'Kay's Tim, last year's winner, and a we_.-krjir—m show performer, second. Tkn iater on won the special prize for the best horse for a fifty-m_e journey, and was first as a gig horse over 10_ hands, the second to him in this class being Mr H. D. Buchanan's mce-looking mare Belle, Mr R. Latter's handsome pair of carriage horses Jock and Tom, which were first last year and also at CJhristchurch, -rere well handled by Mrs Latter, and again secured the first prize ticket, a useful pair of browns belongine; to Mr H. D. Buchanan being second. Mrs Latter won the daisy-cart horse dass, 14 to 14.3 hands, with Dolly. A strong class came out in tlie l_st road-tor division, Dougakl, a firie-loo___g chestnut with nice manner, shown by Mr H. D. Buchanan, being riaced first,'and Mr B. Shadbolt's Bravo was a close second. The latter also won the special prize for the best horse in that class by Victor. Mr J. Rose, for the fourth year in succession, won in the 15st roadster dam with, Maori, —_c w as pu feet in has manner, and a good-looking chestnut, shown by Mr S. Nut*, waa second, that*

two being much above the others in the class. In the daisy-cart horse class, 14.3 to 15.2 hands, .or R. Latters Tom was first, Mx H. D. Buchanan's Daisy second, and the former waa also awarded the special for the best -H-round horse up to 15.2 hands for saddle or light -arness.
