EDUCATION BOARD.
l». 'An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs A. Saunders (chairman), T. W. Adams, H. W. Peryman, R. Dalzeil, J. Rennie, D. Buddo, J. Munnings, T. S. Weston, and C. A. C. Hardy. The Buildings Committee, reported that the question of the New Brighton bath site was.to be brought before the Harbour Board; Mr J. Osborne's tender at 2s 9d a foot was accepted for the artesian well at Doyleston; it was decided that the locality was not sufficiently settled for a school at Omihi, but the Committee were prepared to recommend an aided one. The Okuku Committee were empowered to accept Mr Cook's tender of £3 17s for repairs and painting. The Addington Committee were permitted to use' up to £10 of incidentals towards the expense of the swimming bath; It was agreed to pay Mr Thompson the sum of £20 in settlement of Ms hiad e in respect of the Lyttelton West retaining wall. The report was adopted. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments:—Miss M. Hunter, mistress, Chertsey; , Mise Johanna Hight, first year pupil teacher, Malvern; Mrs M. Lissaman, head mistress, South. Belt, and Mise E. Scott, promotion to vacancy, caused by the resignation of Miia Taylor; Mrs M. Wheeler, sewing mistress,' Rabbit Island; Miss F. Metherell, first year pupu teacher, St." Albans; Miss Baldwin, Miss Morrison, and Miss Watson, promoted in the order named at Sydenham. Resignations were accepted as under -. —Miss Brown, Annat; Miss E. Leggett, Hampstead; Miss J. Morrow, mistress, Little River; Miss A. Stewart, Bromley; Miss W. Seaton, Waltham ; and Miss M. J. Taylor, Gloucester street. It was decided that Leestoii was not entitled to a second pupil teacher; Woodend and Hornby, were each allowed a pupil teacher; Sydenham was allowed an assistant mistress, to act until the March average was ' received. .In consequence of decrease in attendance, it was resolved to recommend the Board to inform the respective committees that the services of the following teachers could not be retained:—Plemington, m'istoess; Lβ Bon's Bay, mistress; Kaikoura Town, assistant mistress; Tinwaldj aeaistanfc ' mistress. tw*o latter caees the appointment of a puoil teacher would reduce the expenditure aaid bring the staff within the scale allowance. The report was adopted. A special report of the* Committee, making arrangements for carrying on the inepectorate was approved. The report of the Normal School was a». proved. *■ _ An application for a side-school at the * Mount Hutt was referred to the Buildings Committee. " . "C ■ 1 On the recommendation of thy Hampstead Committee the Board appointed Mr W. de Compton truant, officer for that district. A letter from the Wangaaiui Board inviting suggestions as to the direction in which several alterations in the existing syllabus should be made, was referred to the . Appointments Committee. <■ Mr Pope, of Halswell, whose son had won a scholarship, was allowed £10 as he did not wish his son to live in town. •The Board went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
