Drt;nkens*es3.—For this offence Mary Haynes and Peter Hanson, were each fined 5s or, in default, twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Brkachks of By-Laws.—Thos. Mant and C. A. Frner for riding bicycles on footpaths were fined, the lirst-named 5s and 7s costs, and the second, who did not answer to the summons, 10s with 7s costs. —Thomas Devunport for grazing cattle on Canal Reserve was tiucd 5s with 9s costs; and 5s expenses of one. witness.—A. Gosling for obstructing a street in Lin-wood by leaving a cart standing, was lined 5s with costs 7s. Rkmamucd.—Robert- Currie, charged with failing to provide, for the proper maintenance of his wife, was remanded till February 11th, being liberated on his own recognisance of £50. Mr Donnelly appeared for him.—Geo. Prebble, charged with tailing to comply with an order of the Court t-o pay 10s per week to his wife, was remanded till February 14th. Allkukd Assault. —Win. Bailey was charged with having, o;i January 19th. assaulted Jiimcjs Wilson. Mr Deacon appeared for tlia plaintiff. Mr Kippenberger lor the defendant. Tlk> plaint ill, who was clerk of the- works at t-hu erection of a building, alleged that, on his objecting ro the method of mixing souio concrete, the- defendant struck him twice in the lace, damaging it severely. Two witnesses called by the- plaintiff proved that he provoked the assault, and acted as it' ho were going to attack the defendant, «nd the case was dismissed, each party u> pay his own costs. L'ahckxy!— Clins. W. Pettersen was charged with having, on February 6th, stolen a quantity of wearing apparel, valued at £1 16s, the properly t.f das. Grace. The evidence showed that the accused had been allowed to sleep in a storeroom in the Lincoln Hotel. After his departure it was I found that a swag in tho room had been pillaged, and the accused, who was overtaken near Rolleston, was found wearing some of the stolen articles, the rest being in his swag. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. AIJiIiGKI) ASSAM.T AND ROMKRY.-—James ! Burns, alias Munro (on remand) ,was charged with having, on February Ist, assatilted Peter Hansen, and stolen from him a watch i and chain, valued at £1 2s. The prosecuj tor stated that on the day named he and the accused were drinking together. Shortly after noon, they were walking on the South i Belt, near the railway, when the accused knocked him down, and taking the watch and chain from his vest pocket, ran away. !J. Pankhunst, barman at the New Zealander i Hotel, stated that the accused on the Ist hist, offered the watch and chain, (produced) in pledge for drinks. M. do Weston, a dealer, deposed that on February Ist she I bought the watch and chain for 4s, from the prisoner, who gave his nume as Williams. Debeotive Livingstone deposed that on arrest, the accused denied having had the watch. Afterwards he s:.id Hansen had ■ given him the watch, and told him where ;he had sold it. He was committed for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court to be held at Christchurch.
