ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A-meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present—Messrs A. Scott (in the chair), Tyree,'L. E. Clark, R. D. Harman, Major Richards, Mr F. W Thompson, and Dr. Dendy. It was decided to accept the offer of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society "of twenty brace of Virginian quail; permission to be obtained to send them out on the Cashmere estate. The stationmasrter at Coalgate was appointed,, subject to the approval of the Railway Department, honorary ranger. The Mandeville and Rangiora, West Eyreton, Cust, and Port Levy Road Boards wrote suggesting that hares should be declared vermin, and that they should be allowed to be shot all the year round. It waa decided to reply that; the Society could do nothing in the matter, and advising the local bodies to await action by the Government. With respect to the recent proceedings against alleged poachers in the Selwyn, it was decided, with the permission of Inspector Broham, to give a bonus to the mounted constable, and also to the ranger. The offer of the - "' hotelkeeper at Coalgate to employ a man when the river gets dry to move the fish to the deeper pools, was accepted. .'" ■ ■ ■ •
