VICTORIAN TRADE.
The trade of Victoria last year forms the subject of a report to the Secretary of Trade and Customs by the statist of the department. Taking the imports first, it appears that they exceed those of the previous year in value by £1,314,422 —the totals for the two years being respectively £16,768,184 and £15,454,482- Last year the value of the gold bullion imported was £2,617,434, of gold specie £7559, and of other imports £14,143,911. The increase in the imports is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the Customs revenue, amounting to £182,222. ' The imports of gold bullion increased by £535,473, the gold specie decreased by £3534, but the silver specie increased by"£38,625. On the other han.- ; the exports fell off to the extent of £867,424, gold specie accounting for £627,780. butter .or £149,687, hay and chaff for £69,114, wine for £18,974, and bacon .and ham for £17,151. There was an increase in the value of the wheat and wool exported, the former increase amounting to £98,030, und of the latter to £37,155. The value of the total exports for the year was £15,872,246, as against £16,739*670 in 1897.
