THE WORLD'S GOLD PRODUCTION.
A preliminary estimate of the value [of the gold production of the world in 1898, made by the director of the United States Mint at the close of the year, reaches the enormous total of £56,600,000, against about £48,000,000 in 1897, the increase for the year being about £8,600,000. Of the total increase about £2,250,000 has been furnished by Australasia, and about £4,500,000 ©-*■ South Africa. Only as recently as 1890 the production was only about £22,000,000. For 1899 the promise is a further increase in the gold production.
