CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Council was held on November 6th. Present—Messrs G. Mcßae (Chairman), D. McLaren, T. P. Uell, A. W. Rutherford and S. Hanghey. The Overseer was instructed to visit Hawkswood as soon as practicable. Correspondence was read— From the Returning Officer, notifying that the proposal to borrow £1200 for Hawkswood riding was carried at a poll on -30th October. From D. Scott, asking to be supplied with four cords of pine firewood. It was resolved that settlers requiring firewood be supplied with it on the usual terms. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that the Hurunui-Greta bridge stock reserve cannot be vested in the Council. The Clerk was instructed to write, asking that this reserve be put up for lease as soon as possible. From the same, asking that the Ranger be instructed to impound stock trespassing on the hill slopes around Port Robinson, with the view of protecting the cocksfoot grass seed. Attended to. From the same, stating that lot 12, block 25, is set apart as a reserve for county offices, but that lot 30 has not been permanently reserved. From the same, notifying that the old local Land Office has been appointed as a place wherein sittings of the R.M. Court shall be held. From the Hospital Board advising that a meeting of the representatives of the Cheviot, Kaikoura find Amuri County Council will be held at Culverden on the 24th inst., for the purpose of returning one member to represent the said counties. It was resolved that this Council support the re election of the present representative. From Public Works Office stating that it is not deemed necessary for that department to take action re discharge of water on to Hall street, and presuming that if a nuisance is caused it is owing to the water channels not being properly attended to. From the Receiver of Land Revenue advising that £29 5s 3d had been paid to the Council's credit, being accrued " thirds." From E. W. C. Wilkinson drawing attention to the state of the drains in Seddon and Hall streets. The Clerk was instructed to take further steps to have the nuisance abated. It was resolved io purchase eggs and heads of small birds during the current month. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Minister of Public Works and ask that the making of the Kaikoura-Conway road be continued from the south bank of the Conway to Hawkswood station, so as to connect with road works the Council intend to do on the Hawkswood road. Mr F. Archer was appointed Returning Officer. The Overseere report was considered, and it was resolved to invite alternative tenders for the supply of 200 yards" of broken metal or shingle for the laundry road. The Overseer was directed to have such repairs to the roads effected as are needed. Accounts amounting to £57 19s 8d were passed.
