SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. First Day. The weather, though cold, kept fair for the opening day of the above meeting. The attendance was the beet for some years. The sport was good right throughout the piece, land some very close finishes were witnessed. The display of Skirmisher in the Cup was roost disappointing. Quiltiri, too, in the Hurdle Race, . performed wretchedly. Vandyke, after bis Welter Handicap success, had his running in the Cup reviewed; but the Stewards deemed that his two performances were in no wise inconsistent. The sum of £2064 10s was passed through the machine, which is £199 103 less than the first day last season ; but this time the Club received a considerable amount for licenses to bookmakers. Double Event drew out from the start, and passing the stand was succeeded by Vandyke and Black and Bed, Skirmisher being the whipper-in. Aβ they ran ont of the straight the light weight took a clear lead, the rest of the field, with the exception of Skirmisher, who was several lengths back, being in close order. Passing the six furlongs post Skirmisher commenced to go up, and rounding the top turn had supplanted Aldershot and Hippomenes, Doable Event still going well in the lead, with Black and Red his nearest attendant. At the home turn Skirmisher was on terms with Vandyke and Black and Bed, but while the latter, when ridden, commenced to draw on the leader, the other two had shot their bolts. At the distance the issue lay between Double Event and Black and Bed, but though the latter made the verdict only half a length, Doable Event won very comfortably. Sippomenee, four lengths back, just beat Skirmisher for third place, Alderehot last. Time, 2min 14sec Dividend, £7 12s. TIMARU TROT HANDICAP, of 30 soys; second 5 soys from the stake. Two miles.

Belmont, followed by Clarence, took up the running, and passing the stand the pair were well clear of Ilex, a wide gap separating the top weight from Strongbotv, behind whom was Quilliri, he being thus early quite out oi the hunt. All along the back Belmont was in command from Olarence, who was leading Ilex by several lengths. Approaching the home turn Clarence closed on 80.1----mont, who was, however, first to land over the last fence, Ilex being half a dozen lengths back. At the distance Clarence had Belmont beateu, and was seemingly winning easily, when Ilex, coming with a fast run on the inside, made the finish an exciting ono, Clarence only getting home by a head, Belmont in third place was three lengths away.
