Gooke, the Secretary of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, in a letter to Tlie Times, states that the New Zealand Shipping Act inflicts a moral wrong and a material injury upon European shipowners. PTOMAINE POISONING. Dr. Stevenson, an expert, has informed Sir Andrew Clarke, AgentGeneral for Victoria, that ptomaine poisoning was equally likely to occur with Home-grown meat as with frozen meat.
EIVALS OF BHEFFIELD. Colonel Lassetter, speaking at Sheffield, said he considered ifc impossible that German and American rivals could compete with Sheffield manufacturers, although the former were always ready to meet the wishes of colonial importers.
SENTENCES COMMUTED.
Constantinople, August 25
The Sultan has issued an irade commuting the sentences passed on Moslems implicated in the massacre of a hundred Armenians at Tokat. Six of the prisoners sentenced to death, are to undergo penal servitude for life in Tripoli, Barbary.
THE SOUDAN EXPEDITION.
Caibo, August 24
The British expeditionary force in Soudan has been able to obtain a supply of fre9h water by sinking a well on the route between Wftdy Haifa and Abu Hamed. DROWNED AT NIAGARA. New York, August 24. A sensational boating accident is reported from Niagara Falls. Whilst three American tourists were in the vicinity of the Falls they mismanaged their boat, which was drawn over the cataract, the occupants losing their lives.
