SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Selwyn Council met yesterday. Present—Messrs R. Westenra (Chairman), J. G. Murray, G. Rutherford, J. Wolfe, \V. Dunlop, J. Rennie and J. Gough. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Boag. Accounts amounting to £862 10s were passed for payment. The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was read and approved. Mr Murray reported that he and Mr Rennie had accepted a tender of £45 for the letting out of Lake Ellesmere. The question of reducing the rates in the Hororata water-race district was referred to the Finance Committee to report. In answer to a letter from the Minister of Lands, it was decided to forward to him the Council's objections to the application of the Christchurch Public Cemetery Board to enlarge the cemetery by the addition of a certain reserve.
The Council approved of the appointment of Air H. H. Pitman as a Trustee under the Ghristohuroh Domain Board, in place of Mr P. Cunningham, deceased. It was decided to ask Mr Wason, M.H.R., to recommend to Go7ernment the appointment of Mr P. Campbell as a Trustee under the Kowai Pass Cemetery Board. Jflans were approved for the new Selwyn bridge, and the Chairman, Clerk and Mr Dobeon, who submitted them, were appointed to place them before the Government Engineer. ! The Avon Road Board applied for a remission of the rates on the Papanui library "on account of extreme poverty." The prayer was acceded to. The Council decided on the application of the East Mai vera Road Board to make a grant in aid of the maintenance of the Waimakatiri Gorge road. The Rakaia and East Malvern Road Boards were granted the usual subsidy for the suppression of small birds. The Secretary of the County Councils' Association wrote, stating that it would be unnecessary to hold the annual Conference, that the Executive would watch the Association's interests during the sitting of Parliament, and would call a Conference should it be necessary. The Registrar of Dogs reported that since commencing he had registered 43 dogs and discovered 127 owners of unregistered dogs in the Avon, and Riccarton districts.
At the suggestion of the Registrar, it •was decided to close the books at the suboffices and withdraw the collars, the collars to be issued from the Council office or by the Registrar. Tenders for leasing reserves were accepted as under: —D. Matherson and Sons, Is 6d per acre, Reserve No. 1800, and 2s per acre, Reserve No. ISIQ, at Springfield, and T. A. Phillip, Is 6d per acre, reserve at Windwhistle.
The Council dealt with some water-race and plantation matters and then adjourned.
