KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. Doubleday), and all Councillors except Cγ. Drabble, to whom leave of absence was granted. Letters were read from Mr B. A. Knight offering to lease part of Cam street. Declined. From the Railway Department agreeing to clear broom on Hilton street. From the Municipal Association for suggestions as to amendments of the Municipal law. Referred to a Committee to prepare suggestions to amend the administration of the licensing question. The Finance Committee reported on a case of overcharged pound fees, finding that the complaint was not upheld, and that in fact there had been an undercharge. The Works Committee reported on the connections to bB made with High street sewer and fixed a price for the same. The fortnight's receipts were £52 8s lid ; the present overdraft was £518 10s 3d. Accounts, amounting to £9 9s 8d were passed for payment. An account for the assistant lamplighter for 6s a day, for seven days, provoked a lengthy discussion, aomo of the Councillors finding fault wilh the want of light and others that the Council should pay the caretaker in full during his illness and pay an assistant as well. Finally the item was passed. Nine applications to leaao part of tho public cemetery and to act as caretaker were received, and Mr J. Richards' tender to lease at £8 a year and act as caretaker at £6 was accepted. On the motion of Cr. Bugg, seconded by Cr. Hopkins, it was resolved that at tho end of the present; term the Council deoline to let any of the unused portions of streets. It was reported that Crs. Blakely, Mathews, and Drabble retiro at the annual election. It was decided that several matters in respect of footpaths and streets be referred to the Works Committee to employ extra labour, and to have same attended to. It was decided to enforce the by-law against persona riding on the footpaths ana embankments.
