ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

On Saturday a young roan named Lawrence Laurenson was drowned in the Tekapo. fle was assisting Mr Jones, a wool carter, to cross the river with a six-horse team and empty wagon from Simon's Pass to Haldon station and was riding a free horse to keep the wagon team moving properly. The water was nob deep, bin was running swiftly, and it is surmised that Laurenaoh got giddy ; for ou Jongs reaching the bank on the leaders the other man was in mid stream,, and his horae was seen soon afterwards riderless. Jones started 'to reacne him, but he quickiy disappeared, and Jones gave np the search and returned to his team. During his absence the waggon, which had not been drawn clear of the river, bad c*psi23d, and the four horses had struggled to get free, with the result that two of them bad been drowned. Subsequently, a man named Scott joined in the search for the missing man, and they found his body a quarter of a milo down the stream. The young man drowned belongs to Pleasant Point.

MASrERTOST, March 9. The body of a man, whose name is unknown, was found near here with his throat oat. A young man was found dead in a paddock, near Master ton, shot through the head and breast, and with a revolver in his hand. He is a stranger to this district, and there is nothing to identify him by except the initials "G.P." in his hat, which bean the name of a Cbristchurch hatter.
