FIRES.
(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, March 9. The Ovalau from Tonga bring? news of a fire on the premises of Forsyth, Schultz and Co., which were totally destroyed. The damage is estimated at £8000. The insurance I Company most concerned is the London and Lancashire. WELLINGTON, March 9. Two more firea have been reported, one in a dwelling above Mr Wyatt's shop on Lambton Quay, where the room was set alight by a little girl striking a match. Mr Wyatt beat the flames out, but was overcome by the amoke, aud fell down and broke his right arm, besides getting scorched. The other fire was in Benham street, where a two-atorev house was gutted. It was owned by Mrs Bailey and occupied by three bachelors, Tne insurances are all small. DUNEDIN. March 9. A nine-roomed residence at Meadowbank farm, East Taieri, owned by W. Shand and occupied by Mr Shore, was destroyed by fire this morning. Mr Shore lost all his effscts, including £11 in money. The house and furniture were partly insured, but the offices and amount are unknown, The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney.
