LYTTELTON REGATTA.
A meeting of the Committee of this regalta was held on Friday evening. The Commodore, Mr J. Joyce, occupied the chair, and there waa a larpe attendance. The Hon. Treasurer, Mr T. L. Smith, reported that the entries, which had cloaed that evening, were highly Batisfaotory. The sum of £57 15s had been received as entrance fees. Four boats'will start for the Champion yacht race, the prize for whion is £100. One of these will be the champion yacht Waitangi, from Wellington. The second and third olass yacht races have brought out five contestants each, and mpat interesting races are expected. The Club rowing races have filled up better than on any previous occasion, and the entries are greatly in advance of last year's./ No lesa than eight competitors will atari for the two single sculling races. The Swimming Committee reported that the sports promised to be the best ever held in the colony. The entries were greatly in excess of last year's. The Fireworks' Committee reported having completed their arrangements, Should these be carried out without a hitoh the exhibition should be one of the mosb attractive features in connection with die regatta. It was decided to start the rowing races by gun fire. An animated discussion took place on the question reserving the enclosure at the end of 'the pier for the sole use of the Committee, and eventually it was decided to strictly enforce the rule not to admit friends of the officials and Committee. The drawing for positions in the rowing races was next proceeded with. The official programmes, giving positions, handicaps of the swimming eventa and all the necessary information, will be available to-morrow afternoon. ..
