MERIVALE v EAST CHRISTCHURCH.
This match, which was played on the Sydenham Park on Saturday afternoon, resulted iv a draw, each side securing 3 points (one try). Mr Collins was referee. Soon after the opening the East were forced from a Merivale rush, which was followed by a nice piece of passing between Spring, Gully, Lorimer and Burns, who touched down, but the try was disallowed for obstruction. The Yellows next appeared on the defensive, relief being afforded by Izett, Mahar, Burns, and Lorrimer. Mason returned play by a good run, and scrums followed on the Yellows' goal line. Play was gradually worked to the centre, and thence back again. Gerard dribbled nicely from a scrum, and Johnstone picked up aud scored a try, which Cooke failed to convert. After the spell, and once more relieving pressure, the Yellows made matters even. Mahar passed to Spring, the ball travelling to Lorrimer and Gully, who made a fine run and scored. Spring was entrusted with the place, but did not improve. The rest of the -spell was one of alternate assault and defence, during which several forcedowns were noted, but neither side was permitted to score, though each, when opportunity occurred, strove hard to win. When time arrived play wa3 near the centre.
