PROPOSED CHILDREN'S FETE.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)

WELLINGTON, May 21. For some time past a movement headed by the Mayor and a Committee of ladies has been under way to give poor children a fete on the Queen's Birthday, and the Committee so far has been very successful in canvassing for the necessary funds. A controversy has taken place in the newspapers as to the wisdom of the proposal to bring unfortunate children before the public gaze. To-day the Benevolent Society received an application from the Committee to be supplied with the names of the families in receipt of aid, and the question led to a deal of discussion, the result being that the Society unanimously decided that such information should "be withheld, and the opinion was freely expressed that great injury would be done to the children if taken cut in almost midwinter on what will evidently be wet gtound ; and further that a more charitable action would be to expend the money raised in providing the children with warmer clothing and boots.
