CHARGE OF CHILD STEALING.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)

AUCKLAND, May 21. It is stated that two Natives named Heremaia Hiku and Eremihia were arrested beyond Kaikohe on Monday by Constable Pihau Riwiri, and charged with child stealing. The prisoners were forwarded from Kawakawa per Clansman to Mongonui, where the olfence was said to have been committed, on Tuesday evening, and the case will be dealt with by the Stipendiary Magistrate there. It appears that the two Natives in question had been on their rounds about Mongonui a few months ago, and spent some time with their relations. They took a fancy to a little Maori girl of eight years of age, and carried her away without the permission of the other Natives. After some time being spent ecouring the country looking for the girl, and thinking she had been killed by the hawks or wild pigs, it waa found that the child was with the Natives.
