SWIMMING NOTES.

Br Leajtdkr,

At an adjourned meeting held last week at Pc-tea (His Worship the Mayor presiding), Mr T. Kella proposed, the Rev. C. C. Harper seconded and it was carried: "That a swimming club be formed, and to be called the Patea Amateur Swimming Club; annual subscription to be 2s Od. The following ciHeer* were elected: — President, His 'Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Kenna); vice-president, Her. C C. Harper; captain. Mr Hope Gibbons; dep. captain, Mr T. Kells; ho». secretary, Mr J. F. G. Larkins; hon. treasurer, Mr J. A. M'Kenna; committee—Messrs ,T. B. At kin, W. Boyle, J. Atkiti, W. Matthews and G. Patterson, Is was decided that all boys under sixteen be admitted free 1 . In Was resolved to hold tlie firat sports on February 15th, and the programme was left in the hands of the committee.

Good new* has been received by Mr Smart during the week from Sydney, to the effect that a strong representative team has decided to come over. Mr Moloney, the SeccetMry of the New South Wales Association, in his letter says that the team may perhaps not include the champions, but we may depend it will be a good one.

Tho visit of the Australians should be a splendid thing for ihe sport, and it will give us nu opp riunity of sceiug some really first class swimmers. The Sydney boyß arc getting very near world's records, as Gormley is credited with having put up time equal to Tyera, the crack Englishman. We shall look forward to the performances of this team as a treat in swimming.

The Christchurch Club have also decided to hold their races at Lancaster Park. They could not have made a better move as far as the sport i-» concerned. The sports hold at New Brighton could not be said to have passed off successfully. The management included too many events on the programme which rather spoiled the day's success, and the course was anything but satisfactory. The swimming nhd finishes were, however, good, and Mr Eyre is to be congratulated on bringing his men so close together at the finish. In justice to him I may say he had nothing to do with the handicaps in the open races, which were simply a farce. Until better arrangamouts are made at New Brighton the Clirisichurch club* will be better away, I would advise the New Brighton people to at once go into the ways and means of forming an amateur club at the favourite resort.

The Lyttelton Club has decided to hold a meeting on Saturday at Lyttelton, to which they invite the cown clubs. A good day's sport should r.sulfc, although I don't suppose it will come up to the New Year's D,iy outing. It i?, however, pleasing to see tho Sport growing in Lyttelton, considering the way the lust club formed there was allowed to disband. The new management is deserving of a wovd of praise. Polo practice is now being carried on at the variouj baths with a push than it deserves. Sydenham, Richmond, East Christchurch, and Curistchurch .are all practising hard. Mr Frank Evans, tho well-known football referee, has been selected to fill the position of referee in the championship, and lam sure he will give every satisfaction. I trust he will strictly enfor.e every rule. I don't think there will be much fear that he will not do so, especially if he follows his actions as referee at the Rugby game. Allan Roper, who was swimming on Saturday, was reckoned to be able to get homo somewhat easily, as he was reported to bs in good form. He swami well, but was not up i;o the task allotted him.

It is reported that Professor Panncll has in hand some of the Christchurch Club's members and hopes to get them on to be good enough to compete in the Championship. At a meeting of the New South Wales Swimming Association held in Sydney on January 4th Sergeant Parkinson appealed against his disqualification for indulging! iua hi<;h dive on the night of the Enterprise Swimming (Jlub Carnival, in opposition to the wishes of the official*. He baaed bis appeal on rnles 41 and 4_, which the chairman ruled did not apply to the case, and it was decided that the embargo should remain unless a full and ample apology was tendered by the offender. The 200 yd» Amateur Swimming Cham* pionshto of New South Wales was decided under the auspices of the ParramattaS.C. at Parratnafcta on January 16th, with the folioTfir.g result:—J. "Helllugs, Bondi, 1; A. Cavlll, Bondi, 2. L. Leo, Enterprise S.C., also started, but did not finish. Helling* won by 10yds., Tlmo, 2min 35sec. The Bleuheim Swimming Club will hold a carnival on February Gth. The principal event will he the 440 yds Championship of Marlborough. A movement is on foot in Wellington to construct some salt water baths on the Thorndou Esplanade. Tho Napier Swimming Club brought off their 4.oyds Ladles' Bracelet on January 19ib. The following is the result:—J. J«nfen, 35gec, 1; C. Palmer, junv, 6i)«c, 2; W. Forsjthe, 60.ee,'3. J. M. Hauiilton, scr, aud four others started. Time, 6n.in.73cc.
