CYCLING NOTES.

By "v^elox' In describing the various exhibits at the National Cycle Show held nt the Crystal Palace, London, early in December. Tlie Cyclist says:—JamkSM'Ewan and Co., 27,. Lombard street. London, E.C., have what we must describe as 'the novelty of the show, in the shape of Dennison's patent " Maori " safety. This machine is distinct in its construction and principles of working. It is very long, having a wheel-base of something like'sir feet. A straight frame runs from the back wheel to the head, and in driving and steering mechanism it is totally distinct. The steering is more like-that of a tandem, being effected by mean* of connections to the fork crown workipg at the bo:tom of a swivelled handle-bar, this coming just forward of the centre of the frame. The swivelling Is central between a pair of bearings; on tho outside of which upright tubss are carried to the handlebar. These tubes are attached to connecting rods running back to cranks on the driving wheel, aud also connected by a second pair of short rod- with foot levers pivoted on a fulcrum below. This gives a (timultaneona motion of both feet and arms iv opposite directions, the movement being very much akin to that of rowing with a sliding seat, the movable position of the feet practically coming to the same thing. As it will naturally be understood that great power is exerted by this combined movement and tut anything like a quick movement of the body would be awkward and undesirable, the driving wheel is geared np by a sun and planet gear to something like 150 in, the whole arrangement and plan of the machine befog distinctly novel. The London Sportsman says of Mr Dennisou'e patent:—Up till now we have not had an opportunity of calling attention to several novelties. One of these is the Maori cycle, the Invention of Mr Denniaon, CLE., of Christchurch, New Zealand. Geared op to 150. aud with » hand-Wer arrangement as well as foot action, it is stated to have attained a speed of 27 mile* an hour. The wheel case is vary lengthy, and altogether the machine preseuts an extraordinary appearance. T. Clarksou, late of Cbrislehurcb, won the One aud Five Mile Bicycle Rices at the Wanganni Caledonian Sports on January 22nd. The T>n Miles Blcyclo Championship of Tasmania was won by Hallam, with Barman icoood.
