London, February 5. The wool sales closed to-day. 92,000 bales were sold to Continental and 16,000 to American buyers; 92,000 bales were taken for home consumption and 50,000 were withdrawn. Compared with previous sales, good free merino remains steady; faulty and inferior id lower; crossbreds par to £d lower, and inferior £d to Id lower. At a meeting of Nelson Bros., the Chairman said the large surplus of sheep in Australia would inevitably affect the price of New Zealand mutton in the English market. The Company would not suffer, .as it had farther reduced contract prices in view of the depression. The affairs of the Company, he said, were in a satisfactory condition, but it had lost £5000 by floods in New Zealand. Mr Marghelt was elected a Director, and Messrs Frederick Nelson and Scott were re-elected Directors. The butter market is recovering, and averages 98s per cwt. The glut of the Danish article is reduced. There are prospects of a good market for Australian apples. Sydney, February G. Wheat, chick, 2s 3d to 2s 4d; prune milling, 2s 7d to 2s Bd. Bran,7£d. Pollard, 7d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cable advice, dated London, February 6th. Wool—The sales closed this day at the level of last sales, except for the following descriptions, prices of which have altered as follows:—Greasy merino (super) par to && per lb higher; greasy merino (medium and inferior), fine greasy crossbred, and medium greasy, crossbred, par to £d per lb lower; washed merino (super), washed merino and inferior), scoured merino (medium and inferior), fine greasy crossbred, fine scoured crossbred, fd to Id per lb lower; medium washed crossbred, medium scoured cro33bred, coarse greasy crossbred, coarse washed crossbred, coarse scoured crossbred, greasy merino lamb (super), greasy merino lamb (medium and inferior) and greasy crossbred lamb, _d per lb lower. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 200,000 bales, of which 92,000 bales have been taken for the Continent and 16,000 T)ales for America. It i 3 estimated that 52,000 bales have bsen held over for future disposal.
Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their head office :— Wool sales closed with less spirit, but without further quotable change. The total available, including old stocks, both Australasian and Cape, was 252,000, out of which 98,000 were taken for Home consumption, 92,000 for the Continent and* 15,000 for America, leaving 52,000 bales to be carried over to next series, of which 17,000 are Cape wools.
