SKIRTS.

The skirts of welkin* dresses art made to touch the ground oaly at the back, or even clear of the ground, a very commend* able fashion, especially, when the. foot is well ehaped and well shod; the width varies from three to four and a half yards; the tcp depends on the bodice; in many cases the skirt is brought up over the bodice, and must then be very accurately fitted and neatly finished oflC If the bodice covers the top of the skirt this need only be mounted with a binding. Back breadths are lined throughout, with stiff muslin, or wish a kind of horsehair canvas made upeeiaUy for the purpose. Some French dressmakers put two or three very light and flexible steels at the edge of the skirt'and a •matt crescent-shaped tournure at the waist, finuhed off with a flounce of stiff muslin, about six inches deep and mounted in box pleats. All this, of course, answers the purpose of throwing out Che skirt at the back, but the same object can be attained by making the petticoat full and trimmed with fluted flounces to the waist at the back. An to the steel*, their use is quite exceptional'and must not be taken as an indication that the dreaded crinoline is coming in again. - - - Gored, organ-fluted skirts are still much worn, and the well-rounded pleats are kept In place by a series of' three elastic bands underneath. These 4nd other plain skirts are trimmed a!<t|se edge with a four or five inch deep flounce, mounted in apaced box pleats, with a bias band of velvet or moire in a contrasting colour, on which h an applique of biacfe or cream I guipure a trifle narrower than the foundation band.
