The ordinary meeting was held on Friday, October 12th. Present—Mr Wallace (Chairman), and Messrs Gray, Mclntyre, Moody and Stalker. Bognell to erect a hat on Fernside gravel pit, subject to its being removed if required. The Ranger reported on dogs unregistered, and applied for written authority to impound cattle. This was agreed to, but the Board could not allow driving fees. It was ordered that all owners of dogs, whether Europeans or Maoris, who neglect to register should be sued. Letters were read from G. and H. Gibbd asking for permission to fence unused road near their properties at Woodend, and offering rent for the same. Agreed to for seven years, the agreement to be subject to the approval of future Boards, the land to be fenced in accordance with the Fencing Act, no live fence to be planted. Messrs W. H. Luxton and J. Coatee applied to have ruts filled on Brown's road. Agreed to. A circular was read from the Commissioner of Taxes, and Mr Gray moved, and Mr Mclntyre seconded—"That having regard to the unequal and unsatisfactory manner in which the assessments have been made, this Board, is of opinion that the most suitable form of assessment for local rating is to obtain from each owner of landed property hia valuation, and if same is considered too low that the Government should at any time within six mouths take such property at that valuation, and that ten per cent, should be added to guard against vexatious disturbances; the Board to review all valuations and to report to the Tax department if they think any undervalued; that the Board assents to the proposal of the Commissioner that the valuation roll be copied." From Mr J, Smith, for ditch to be cleaned at Fernside. It was decided to be in the River Board's jurisdiction. From Kaiapoi Borough Council, for amount of contribution to district severed. Passed for payment. It was decided to have gone grubbed in Fernside Racecourse gravel reset ye to give work to the unemployed. Accounts, £170 6e 6d were passed.
