SOCIALS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

A very enjoyable dance took place at the Montreal street Hall on Friday night, in connection with the Tenuis Club of which Mrs Treloar is President. About fifty couples were present, and acommitte, consisting of Mrs Treloar and Misses Partridge, Clarkson, Brown, and Edwards superintended all arrangements. A vote of thanks was passed to Sirs Treloar for the use of the tennis court in Grafton street.

The first ordinary meeting of the Papanui Literary Society was held on Friday evening, when there was a good attendance, the President, the Rev. G. C. Harrison, being in the chair. The Rev. H. C. M. Watson delivered an address on " Life on the Goldfields." The address dealt largely with the Rev. gentleman's personal experiences, and proved most interesting ana instructive. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Watson at the close.

A meeting, convened for the purpose of inaugurating a Mutual Improvement Class, was held in tbe Tai Tapu Library on Wednesday evening. Mr R. A. Forbes was voted to the chair, aud, after stating the object of the meeting, expressed his pleasure at the prospect of establishing such a necessary adjnnct to the working machinery of any district. It was unanimously resolved to form a class, and the following were elected officers:—President, Mr R. A. Forbes; Vice-Presidents, Messrs H. E Peryman and S. Carleton; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr C. Suckling; Editor of Journal, Mr Robert McCartney ; Committee, Messrs R. W. Rainey, Blake, J. F. Watson, T. O. Morgan, and George Forbes. After arranging matters of detail, the meeting adjourned till next Wednesday evening, when the rules, by-laws, and syllabus will be decided upon.
