THE PREMIER AND THE NATIVES.
(PRBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 9. The Hon. R. J. Seddon, accompanied by the Hon. Mr Carroll, arrived at Mokau at 6 o'clock lasb evening, after a fifty miles ride from Taumaronui. They came from Mokau by rail velocipede to Tekuiti, and arrived there at 8 p.m. They had a most enjoyable trip. The weather was fine all the way and the tracks fairly good. The meetings with Natives at several settlements were very successful. The Premier met a large assembly of Natives at Tekuiti this morning, and a very hearty reception was accorded him and Mr Carroll, the Natives giving a dance and songs of welcome. A lengthy discussion ensued in reference to the Native land question. The Natives are desirous that all their lands shall be dealt with under the Native Lands Acquisition Act of lasb session, and that the present restrictions should be removed. The Premier made no promise, preferring to ascertain the Natives' minds fully before arriving at a final decision. After the interview, the Premier came on to Otorohanga and was met there by Wahanui and other Native chiefs. Tawhiao has through Tuapu requested the Premier to meet him near Hamilton. He has not yet settled to do so. If Tawhiao makes a direct request for an interview he will do so, but not otherwise. A large meeting of Natives is expected to take place at Hamilton. The Premier will probably reach Auckland on Monday. Later. A messenger, Tama Tewhanga, son of the the famous chief William Thompson, the King-Maker, was sent to Mr W. A. Graham by Tawhiao, from bis settlement at Parawhera, asking if the Premier would meet Tawhiao and other leading chiefs at Hukerani, on Monday ; if not, they would meet him at Hamilton. Mr Graham telegraphed to the Premier's Private Secretary at Otorohanga, informing him of Tawhiao's message, and received a reply that the Minister would be passing through Hamilton tomorrow, when he would receive Tawhiao or any Native chiefs who might wish to se_ him. The messenger was dispatched back to Parawhera with this intelligence for Tawhiao, who, it is understood, will be at Hamilton on Monday.
