ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A social meeting was held at the Kaiapoi Church of England Sunday Schoolroom on Tuesday eveniug, at which a journal of a voyage to England by the Rev. H. Northcote was read, and among other items on the list of the entertainment Tennyson's " May Queen " was given with much effect by some of the young ladies of the choir and Sunday school. There was a good attendance, and the meeting was a very pleasant one. At ta meeting of the Kaiapoi Rifles "At : Home" Committee on Tuesday evening a balance, after paying all expenses, was reported of £5 4s 4d, which was. handed to , the general funds of the corps. ' j Last night, at the Social Hall of the ' Students of Truth, there was a very large attendance. The opera of " The Bohemian Girl" was repeated aud went excellently. The last of the weekly socials of the Canterbury Caledonian Society, for the S resent season, was held last night. Mr ohn Conual presided. Songs were given by Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Marshall, Misses McGregor and Neave and Mr Ramsay. A topical duet, by Miss Florence and Mr Young, created great amusement, and was encored. Miss Vartha and Miss Sheriff played piano solos, and recitations were given by Miss Baveridge and Mr Ramsay. A ball on the 26th instant, at Hobbs' Buildings, will conclude the season. ] A very successful tea meeting was held : at the Blue Ribbon Hall iasc night in connection with the Central Mission. After tea a social was held in the Tuam Btreet Theatre, when Pastor Birch presided. ] Mr Robert Parker, of St. Paul's Pro. Cathedral, Wellington, gave an organ recital last night at the Cathedral, which was a frcat treat to all lovers of organ music, 'he programme was an exceptionally good one and all the items were most artistically played, especially " Cavillon's De Dunquerque," " Aye Maria," aud "La Canta." Mr Millar was the vocalist and sang the recitative and air " Now heaven in fullest glory " and "Arm, arm, ye brave," very well indeed. I
