WANGANUI, May 15. It is officially announced to-night that Mr A. J. Parsons has retired in favour of Mr A. D. Willis, who, of course, stands in the Government interest. The contest now lies between Mr Gilbert Carson (Opposition) and Mr Archibald D. VVillis (Government).

The polling day for the election has been fixed for the 9th June, and the nominations on the 2nd. Mr Morton Jones is the Returning Officer.

WELLINGTON, May 15.

The Temperance party here announce that it will be their policy at the next election not to vote for any candidate, irrespective of political consequences, who is not willir-g to entrust the majority of the voters with the power of vetoing the sale of drink locally. The Inangahua, election ia fixed for Thursday, June Bth. The Minister for Lands sailed South this afternoon, and will address his constituents next week.

The Premier leaves for Napier to-morrow morning, and addresses a public meeting on Wednesday night. He returns on Thursday, and proceeds to Greymouth on Friday, where he opens the Greymouth-Hokilika railway. He expects to be absent a week on the Coast, then returns here, and goes to Auckland.

DUxNEDIN, May 15. Sir R. Stout's engagements at the InvercargiU circuit the week after next, and the necessity for bis presence at Napier in the first week in June as .senior counsel for Mr Cadman in the libel case, will effectually prevent him visiting the 'Inangahua electorate. In an address to the electors he emphasises the necessity of Liberals fighting shoulder to shoulder to preserve the advantages they gained in 1890. He promises to use every effort to put the Midland Railway on a secure basis, consistent always with due regard to the colony's interests, and points to the need for improving local government with the view of giving increased responsibilities to local bodies.

At a meeting of his constituents at Ohoka on Thursday night Mr Edwin Blake,' the member for Avon, received a vote of thanks. His speech was chiefly a recapitulation of that delivered at Papanui. Mr Wright, Clerk of the Eyreton and Mandeville Road Board, presided.
