Tuesday, May 9. (Before J. T. Brice and S. R. Webb, Esqs., J.P.'s.) Assault. —James McLean, second engineer ot the s.s. Taieri, was charged with assaulting two firemen, John O'Brien and John Collins. Mr Nalder appeared for the defendant. The evidence was to the effect that the complainants went on board the steamer in Wellington under the influence of drink. O'Brien was not ready to turn to at the proper time, and the officer went to the forecastle for him. A quarrel ensued, aud the officer eventually struck the firemen. He was fined 20s. The charge brought by Collins was dismissed.
