ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
On the arrival of the s.s. Manapouri yesterday morning it was reported that Mr A. Beaumont, a saloon passenger from Wellington to Lytteiton, had been missed the previous night between the hours of ten and eleven, and had apparently either fallen or jumped overboard. It appears that the unfortunate man, who was a well-known run-holder in the Marlborough district, was going to England in the direct liner Kaikoura, which sails to-day, taking with him bis wife and three children and a servant, all of whom were on board the Manapouri. He had been Bubjcct to fitß of melancholia, and an the voyage from Picton to Wellington his wife had considerable trouble with him, as he seemed more than usually dull and inolined to do away with himself. On the family joining the Manapouri at Wellington Mrs Beaumont said she must share the same cabin as her husband, and they were allotted a large deck cabin. The officers of the ship knew nothing, however, of .he tendency shown by deceased or the cabin would have been closely watched. Between 20 and 11 o'clock the alarm was raised that Beaumont was missing, and a thorough search was made of the vessel, but without a trace of the unfortunate man bsing discovered. The only conclusion that could be arrived at was that he had gone on deck and had theu either fallen or jumped overboard. William Murray, a little boy about five years of age, son of Mr George Murray, baker, of Rakaia, was instantaneously killed on Tuesday morning. The child's mother called him to look at a traction engine and chaff-cutter, which were passing the house, when he ran to sit on' one of the footboards of the ehaffcutter, where boys often sit for a ride, and missing his hold he fell under the chaff-cutter. When picked up by his father he was quite dead. The only mark on him was a bruise on the side of his head.
