GERALDINE COUNTY ANGLING SOCIETY.
The annual competition in connection with the above Society took place on Tuesday,, and drew fifteen entries. Ail the competitors, however, did not weigh in, and the display of fish was poorer in a general way than on previous occasions. This is to be accounted for by the erratic weather. A bright glinting sun, followed by a cold wind, was decidedly unfavorable for fly fishing, while the evening was equally unpropltions for those using tbe minnow. The fish taken with the fly were weighed by Mr Peter Colra at the Crown Hotel before 11 p.m. on Tuesday ; those taken with the minnow, prior to 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The various takes, undistinguished by any marks, were then laid out and judged by Messrs Clarfc, Gould and Quinn in the following order :— For artificial fly only (hours 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.)— First prize, value £1 ls, with privilege of winner's name and take being engraved on trophy presented by Mr R. H. Rhodes for heaviest basket, Mr W. Mendelson, 55 fish, weighing 221b; second prize, value los, for best average basket (awarded by judges' decision), Mr J. Findlay, 19 fish, weighing 101b; special prize, presented by Messrs Velvin and Taylor, for largest number of fish of legal size, Mr C, Nicholas, 20 fish, weighing 9Mb. For any legal bait excepting natural and artificial fly—(Hours 0 a.m, to 6 a.m. following morning)— First prize, value £1 ls, with privilege of, winner's name and take being engraved on trophy presented by Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R.; heaviest basket—Mr A. Hope, 5 fish, 28_ib. Second prize, presented by Mr A. Hope, for best average banket (awarded by Judges' decision)—Mr Meredith Kaye3nsb,7|lb. Third prize, value los, for heaviest iflsh—Mr D, Taylor, 1 flab, slb. Competitors by the rules were debarred from receiving more than one prize, otherwise Mr Mendelson would have taken an extra in the first class, and Mr Hope that for the heaviest fish, one of his weighing s|lb, The result of the competition nas been rather disappointing in view of recent heavy takes, but Mr Mendelson's record from a numerical point of view is hard to beat.
