ANGLING COMPETITIONS.
ANGLING SOCIETY. The result of the angling competition the auspices ,of the Anglers', Society was this year not so successful aa on previous occasions. This was through no want of enthusiasm on the part of the anglers, nor was it caused by any apathy on the part of the Society. The former were numerous, and the latter offered attractive prizes. The sole causa of the comparative failure was the weather, and Inconsequence there is some talk of organising a minnow competition before the season closes. The weather on Tuesday wa3 not calculated to please the angler. The nor , -westers haa increased to flood the Rakala, Waimakariri, and {Rangitata, and had dried up many of the smaller creeks. Of the many anglers who entered for the competition, but few obtained good or fairly good baskets, and the takes were either from the Selwyn (Upper and Lower), the Avon, and Halls Creek. The six who brought mc their baskets displayed their fish at the shop of Mr Alpe, where they were inspected by a lot o| people. Tbe weighing was conducted by Dr. Moorhouse, Mr H. B. Bird, and Mr Ritchie, in the presence of a number of people. The weighing came out as under :r— A. M. OUivier, 281b Qoz, four fish. W. U. Spackman, 261b 13oz, three fish. G. Ritchie, 161b 7oz, two fish. F. W. Hunt, 71b lojoz, eight; fish. Dr. Moorhouse, 12lb 9&oz, thirteen fish. C. Morris, 51b lOoz, one fish. The prizes were then awarded as follows—Best basket by fly, Dr. Moorhouse, £3; heaviest fish, with fly, Mr F. W. Hunt, 10s; heaviest basket, taken by any legal means, fly excepted, Mr A. M. OUlvier, £2; heaviest fish ditto. Mr Spackman, 10s; heaviest basket takeu by any legal means by anglers who had not pro viously Won a prize, Mr G. Ritchie, £110s
