FATAL ACCIDENT IN A MINE.
9 [PBSSS ASSOCIATION TBLEGBAH.] HOKITIKA, March 6. A man named Eobert J. Smith sustained a fatal accident in a shaft to-day. While engaged prospecting near the loop line deceased and mate found the rope need too short and borrowed one from a neighbor. The mate thought the rope not strong, bat Smith resolved to try it. When down 50ft the rope broke, and the unfortunate ■■ an fell the remaining 50ft to the bottom and was very much injured. was got out after some time, but died whilst being conveyed to the hospital
