THE LOST PROFESSOR.
DTJNEDLN, December 26. The Daily Tim*** search party have returned, the search for Professor Brown having proved unsuccessful. They went over the Saddle, and could see a way by which the Sounds could be reached, but they did not go through, not deeming it likely that Professor Brown would do so. As it unhappily appears that all hope that Professor Brown, who was lost in the Manapouri country on the 6th instant, will now be found alive must be abandoned, the following brief sketch of his career (which we take from the Southland Times) will be interesting:—John Main waring Brown was born in 1854, and educated at Tunbridge Grammar School, Studying there from 1867 to 1572. In the he obtained one of the exhibitions of *lou a year given by the school, and tenable foT four years at either Oxford or Cambridge. He chose Cambridge, and entered Christ's College. In 1875 he took his B.A. degree, eommgout second in the firstrclass of the Tripos. 1881 he acted as lecturer in History at Cambridge University under the Board of Historical Studies. He was called to the Knglish Bar in 1881, and shortly after he was elected Professor of Ungliah at Otaco University.
