N. Z. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
WELLINGTON, January 4. At to night's banquet to the New Zealeand Educational Institute the Minister of Education stated that hitherto no mention had been made in print of what was nevertheless the fact, that the present Government had effected a saving of no less than .£60,000 in the cost of education. The Rev. T. FlavelL of Christchurch; another speaker at the banquet, said it wao understood at an interview between the deputation from the Institute and the Minister for Education that Government would ask Parliament to abolish either Education Boards or School Committees, and if the former, the latter would have larger districts. There appeared to be a very strong feeling among those present that the School Committees shouldgo, andthe Boards be retained Anew educational work has just been submitted to the Minister by Mr G. W. Russell, of Waikato, who unsuccessfully contested the district last election with Mr Whyte. It is in the form of a catechism on moral principles and duties, and is designed to supply an element of moral teaching and training in State schools without importing religion. It has been favorably received generally by educational authorities.
