THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.
AUCKLAND, January 21. F. Larkworthy, late Managing Director in London of the Bank of New Zealand, is at present in the colony on a tour of inspection in the interests of the "New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. He was interviewed by the H«ro-J reporter yesterday, when the following conversation ensued:— Were the steps which were taken here lately to rehabilitate the Bank of New Zealand approved by you?— Certainly, and the appointment of the proposed Committee was strongly supported by myself and the London Board. Have those steps in your opinion been successful, and what effect are they likely to have on the future of the Bank ?—They have been most successful, and are likely to have a most beneficial effect on the future of the Bank. I think, however, it would have been better if the personal conflict could have been more recognised as the ultimate cause of the troubles of the Bank. SUIII recognise that it is very difficult to avoid personalities in such a case. In the Australian colonies the steps to which yon refer have been almost forgotten. The business of the Bank there is increasing, and the institution is likely to be stronger in the estimation of the public than ever it frag been. Here you well know this institution is regarded with high favor. Were the deputations from the Committee of much service to the Bank in London? Of great service, and your fellow townsman, Mr Horton, for his indefatigable, lesions and successful labors, deserves the warmest thanks of shareholders. No one knows better than I do the value of his services. I would also add that the Committee and its worthy Chairman have weU earned the thanks of shareholders, and in my opinion the institution is most fortunate in having for its present Chairman a gentleman whose quaiineations are of so high a character for the post as those of Mr Buckley.
