THE TRAGEDY IN AN ASYLUM.

[from our correspondent.]

fßv Telegraph from the Blitff.J

MELBOURNE. January 17.

An inquest on the body of Archibald Hunter, a warder of the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum, who was found in a dying state in one of the cottages attached to the Asylum on December 29th, has concluded. Since the beginning of the inquest Joseph Howard an inmate of the Asylum, and one of the men upon whom suspicion rested in connection with the affair, made a statement, in which he said that he had committed the murder himself, and that nobody else had any hand in it. This statement was borne out by corroborative evidence given by the warders and medical Officers of the institution. The Coroner pointed out to the jury that a verdict of manslaughter was out of the question, as there was no evidence to show that the deceased had been killed by accused in self-defence, and the only alternative lay between a verdict of'homicide while of unsound mind, and of wilful murder. The Jury brought in a verdict of wilful murder, and Howard was committed to take his trial at the forthcoming criminal sessions.
