WELLINGTON, January 22, The anniversary of the province was observed to-day as a close noli day. The weather was delightfuL The fresh breeze which was blowing in the forenoon died away later in the day. The regatta was the principal attraction in ,townJ The presence' of the squadron in harbor created greater interest in the events,, inasmuch as several crews from the fleet; competed. No accidents of - any moment occurred to mar the pleasure. A small yacht, the lona, capsized in a squall, but the • occupants were soon rescued and the boat was secured. In the First-class Handicap Yacht Race, Mr T. Kebbell's Florence came in half an hour ahead of Mr H. Rawson's Girola, but as she had to allow the latter that amount of time, the race was a dead heat; Xarifa third, Isca, Thetis, and Zanthe also competed in the Second Class Handicap Yacht Race. Mr J. R. Gibbons' Pet came in 2min Bseo ahead of Mr T. G. Osborne's Dream, but as the. latter was allowed 4min, she takes first money and Pet second. Silvery Wave was third boat. Iris, Red Jacket, and Maia also competed. The other events were third -class''yachts—Vulcan; ten. or twelve-oared Cutter Race, open to men-of-war; Rapid crew, 1; Lizard, 2; Orlando, 3. Cutter Race for Torpedo ' arid Naval Corps; Torpedo crew, won. First Class Sailing Race, for boats not exceeding 16ft; Defiance. , Handicap Sailing Race, confined to boats from Squadron—Orlando, 1; Rapid, 2. The inaugural sports of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club were held on the Basin Reserve. About 1500 were present. His Excellency the '. Governor and Admiral Fairfax were present. Events;—lPO yards, J. King, scratch, 1; Guy Cooper, 10yds, 2; H. W. Batger, 4yds, 3; time 10±see. Two mile bicycle handicap—Guy Cooper, 200 yds, 1; C. Pearse, 300 yds, 2; Rowel Nelson, 70yds, 3; time 7min 30sec. Putting the weight—Malcolm, 34ft llin; on second try placed it 36ft lin; this beats New Zealand record by 2ft 7in. 250 yards handicap—J. King, scratch, 1; H. S, Izard, 20yds, 2; F. Clark, 15yds, 3; time 27 4 sth sec One mile bicycle—Leslie, Timaru, 100 yds, 1 j Guy Cooper, 100 yds, 2; T. G. Heywood, 200 yds, 3. One mile walk—L. Tripp, scratch; 1; time 7min 40sec 120 yards hurdle amateur championship—H. W. Batger, 1 j W. J. Moir, Canterbury, 2; G. Hume, 3. Won easily; time, 17sec. This beats the amateur record of the colony by onefifth of a second. Three mile bicycle— C. Pearce, 500 yds, 1; A. Leslie, Timaru, 275 yds, 2; T. G. Heywood, 650 yds, 3 ; time, llmin 37isec. Ladies' bracelet, 440 yards—G. Williams, 23yds, 1 ; time, smin 3isec One mile —a .S. Paterson, 30yds, 1 1 F. Powell, scratch, 2; time, 4min 57isec,
