SERIOUS RIOT.
PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR.

A serious riot took place at the New Lambton mine, Newcastle, yesterday. A number of laborers, who had /been engaged to put out coal, were rushed by a mob of some thousand miners, armed with sticks. The police attempted to protect the men, but were powerless against the numbers, and violence was only prevented by the surrender of the laborers, who underr took to refrain from doing any more work. A force of the Permanent Artillery, under Colonel Spalding, with a Nordenfeldt gun, was despatched to the scene from Sydney, but the men had dispersed before its arrival.

In consequence of the miners' riot at the Lam-ton Mine, Newcastle, his Excellency the Governor has issued a proclamation calling upon the citizens to assist in maintaining law and order in the coal districts. The proclamation warns the miners that stringent measures will be adopted by Government for the security of those engaged in lawful work-
