Mr Qillies announced in the House yesterday that the Government would abandon their Budget proposals, pass the Electoral Bill, and appeal to the country.

THE PACIFIC CABLE.

Further replies have been received by Mr Gillies from the Governments of Other colonies with reference to the proposed survey of the Pacific cable route. The Government of Tasmania state, that they consider it undesirable that Great Britain should be relieved of her obligations in the m—iter, and a.d—ise tbat a. further appeal should be made to the Imperial Government to facilitate the survey and bear a portion of the cost. The Government of Western Australia state that they will be guided by the action taken by other colonies, and will await the receipt of their replies on the Bubject before committing themselves to a decision. The Government of South Australia have replied that they cannot contribute to the cost of the survey.

A DETECTIVE SHOT.

Me-BOUrnb, September 19. Petective Stoke, who was proceeding to arrest a larrikin, was fired at and badly wounded. Se now lies in a critical condition.
