WAIMAKARIRI HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Boaril was held on Monday. J 'resent-Messrs Moore (Chairman), May, Moody, Mathews, Oram, Smethurst. Letters were rend from Marine Department, as to temporary signals adopted by the Board, and pointing out that they were not in accordance with the Harbors' Act. From Mr J. Sims, suggesting that proposed flagstaff should be placed on ;v punt moored near the beacons, as the proposed site was not sufficiently near the bar to be useful, and offering the use of anchor, &c, to moor the punt. Mr May considered the suggestion a good one, but the Board had not the funds to carry it out. Mr Smethurst said the punt would soon be filled with sand if placed where suggested. It was decided to defer the consideration of the letter. The "Works Committee reported that reserve IJJI7 had been surveyed, and they recommended that it be let by tender in three lots: that specifications had been drawn out and tenders invited for erection of flagstaff; and that willow trees near the bridge had been removed. The Board decided to let the reserve as suggested. The pilot's report stated that the channel in the river was navigable for vessels drawing 7ft (sin : that he hud sounded the bar. and found a depth of 10ft !)in at high water; that a temporary signal staff had been erected, and that he required certain flags to replace those recently lost; the bank near pilot's house had been put up as authorised, the Board's share of the work being £t. The report was adopted, the Board deciding to procure new signals. Accounts amounting to £21 2s !)d were passed. The credit balance at the bank was stated to £90 12s. The Chairman said that the Government had pnid £40 due to the Board for the pilot's salary, which he considered satisfactory. On the motion of Mr Smethurst it was resolved — "To request the Works Committee to report at next meeting as to erection of a landing stage on south side of river, and to erect a fence near the present landing stage. ,. Three tenders for erection of liagstafl" were passed. Mr May considered the plan too elaborate, and beyond the Board's means. Mr Smethurst inquired why the specification had not been submitted for tlie Board's approval. Mr Oram said that some of the members of the Board had inspected the proposed site, and adopted a plan which they thought would be satisfactory. The particulars had not been submitted to the Board, as it was desirable to expedite the matter. The Chairman said it had been understood that the Works Committee should call for tenders. It was resolved, on Mr May's motion, to decline the tenders received, and to request the Works Committee to bring up plans, &c, for a cheaper description of signal staff at next meeting. Mr Silvester waited on the Board with reference to." renting a portion of the foreshore on which osier willows were growing. It was decided to grant him leave to cut the willows for a term of five years at £7 per annum. The Chairman said that as the Pilot's salary to the end of last month had been paid by the Government it would be requisite for the Board to give him. notice that the Board would dispense with his services at the end of September. This was agreed to and the Board adjourned.
