ELLESMERE.
A meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held in the Road Board office, Leeston , on Wednesday, Ist May. Present—Messrs Rennie (chairman), Boag, Bourn, Earle, and Lockheed. Correspondence was read and considered .—From the Selwyn County Counoil, requesting a return of the amount of rateable property within the district. The overseer was instructed to supply the information required. From the Selwyn County Council, referring to grants in aid to the recreation and cemetery reserves. The overseer was instructed to inform the Council that trustees had been appointed in whom the reserves would be vested forthwith. From the Secretary for Public Works, asking for a return of expenditure incurred during the year ended 30th March, 1878. From L. V. Dssborough and others, requesting the formation of certain streets in the township of Southbridge. The overseer was instructed to inform the petitioners that the works would be undertaken upon compliance with the usual conditions. From Messrs J. and W. Lambie, stating objections to drainage of the road between their sections and those of Mr Cant according to the plan proposed, and suggesting a plan for effecting the same. The overseer was instructed to estimate the cost of each plan. From C*ptoi a wail ' complain-
ing of the Btate of the road from Brown's corner to Stony gully. The overseer was instructed to attend to the matter. Dr. Chapman and Mr Spring attended, to bring under the notice of the Board certain nuisances existing at the rear of the hotels in Southbridge. The overseer was instructed to put in a culvert across the road, to have the side drain cleared, and to require the proprietors of the hotels to flush the drains. Mr Johrston apv-lied for the clearance of about thirty chains of Boggy Creek, and offered to pay one-third of the cost. Granted. Mr P. Campbell applied to have about fifteen chains of the road past the blacksmith's, in Killinchy, formed. Granted. Messrs Rothery and Petrie applied for the formation of about fifteen chains of the Pahau road formed. Granted. The tender of Mr Sar.drey for supply of teams was accepted at los per day, single teams at 12s per day. A resolution of the public meeting of ratepayers, requesting a grant of £250 in aid for improvement of the recreation ground, and a like amount for the cemetery reserve, was considered. The Board determined that they could not allocate the funds at their disposal to purposes indicated. It was decided to call a public meeting of ratepayers for Ist June to consider the advigableness of bringing the Local Electiors Act into force within the district. The overseer's report was read and approved. The pay-sheet, amounting to £1137 14) Bd, was passed for payment.
