Bancioka. —A large and important sale of building sites in the centre of tins township was held at the Ked Lion Hotel, on Thursday, Mr F. M, Kickinan, beiugthe auctioneer. The land disposed of consisted of a large portion of the section known as Fitzgerald's, aportion of which had been taken for the line of railway, the remainder beingsold yesterday vi building allotments of quarteracre sections. The best sites have frontages on High street and the Ashley road. A street has been laid out through the section coming out opposite Ked Lion Hotel. A number of gentlemen having partaken of an excellent luncheon at the Ked .Lion Hotel, by invitation from the auctioneer, the sale was commenced by Mr Eickman reading the conditions of sale, and drawing the attention of those present to the value of the land to be sold, situated as it was near the heart of the principal commercial town iv the northern district, besides being contiguous to the railway stations of the Christchurcii aud Oxiord lines. .He dilated at some length npon the propriety of those in want of building sites to secure some of the allotments to be oflered, or they would live to regret it, as there was very little available land near the centre of Kangiora to be had. The first lot, a corner section, was knocked down to Dr JDownes, for £230 for thirty- two perches ; lot 2 to Mr I'ring, £85 ; lot 3 Mr Ivory, £85 ; lot 4, Mr J. Macfarlane, £U0; lot 5, Mr Steggall, £00; lot 6, J. Thompson, £go. The remainder ot the lots, numbering 7 to 96, were also sold at prices varying from £10 to £75.

Melbourne.— The "Argus'" of the 3rd instant reports : — In the impcrt markets business has not been marked by anything of a special nature throughout the forenoon. Only trifling sales for the supply of actual requirements have been reported.,The arrival of the mail steamer at Adelaide has not created any stir whatever in the market. Klein- is very tirm, and any sales making fully realise our quotations of £10 12s Gd to £10 15s. Wheat is likewise very saleable at our quotation ot ss Id, and there is every appearance of this figure being sustained. Oats are dull, and we have no fresh business to report. Quotations range front 3s 6d to 4s. Maize presents a decidedly firmer tone. There are no sellers to-day under 4s (id, but nothing has transpired in the way of sales, and much of this improvement will depend on how supplies will come forward. Advices from Sydney report a firmer market there.
