RATES NOT PAID BY GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS
Queries by the Post and Telegraph Department about certain rates on transit flats and the Railways Department about some rates on houses bought by it for its employees required drastic action, said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at a meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. The so-called transit. flats were equivalent to State rental houses, said Mr Barry. It was understood by the Municipal Association, said Mr Barry, that Government departments would not pay rates on houses occupied by employees such as stationmasters but that they would pay on houses bought because of the general housing position. In this case, the latter conditions applied. Normally special rates were paid by State departments. It was decided to take up the matter with the Municipal Association.
