NORTHERN RAILWAY LINK
GISBORNE CHAMBER’S WORK The following extract was taken from the annual report presented at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce:— Very little progress, if any, has been made with the matter of the northern railway link with Auckland since the, last annual report was submitted. The chamber has discussed the matter with the Auckland chamber, who are still just v as enthusiastic as we are in getting a start made on the survey for this very important line. Various factors militated against very much being done during the past year,, and afteF consultation with our northern colleagues, it was decided in view of the General Election engaging the attention of Parliament during the latter part of the year, it would be advisable to postpone any further representations in this matter until the country had settled down again after the election. The time is nowopportune to press forward'on this matter of getting an immediate start made on the survey of the line, and in the very near future the chamber will be giving all its support to the Gisborne-East Coast Regional Planning Council, which since its revival would now appear to be the logical body to press forward for this very important national work. Whilst there may be difficulty in securing the necessary material for some time, very little material is required in the way of the initial survey, and if shortage of experienced staff in the public service is holding this matter up, then the Government should call for assistance from private surveyors in order to get on with the matter. This particularly is one which will engage the immediate attention of the chamber following the annual meeting.
